Giving With a Longterm Purpose

Last updated 5 months ago

The smell of the potpourri, and the Muzak Christmas music in the gift shop along with the sound of the Salvation Army Santa's bell in the crisp air outside, all tell of the season. It really is the season for giving even if you have long lost belief in the Christ of Christmas. (Though I have not.) I believe we all want to do "good." This year when you consider giving to a charity regardless of your ability to give, stop and think before droping a few coins in a red bucket or even helping provide a meal for some hungry families. Consider what you could give that will last long after you are gone. We all know the adage "Give a man a fish and he will eat today, but teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." Here are a couple things you could consider. Give to Habitat for Humanity (www.habitatsa.org) and help a family get a house that will continue giving to them for years and years. Give to World Vision (www.worldvisiongifts.org) toward the digging of a well in a third world country and that water will literally save lives for a decade. Give to an organization here in downtown San Antonio like Strong Foundation Ministries (www.strongfoundation.org) that provides temporary housing for families but also with that the help they need to get back on their feet and back into a house of their own. Atlas Floors would love to hear what ideas you have for giving with a longterm purpose.
